Disneyland Crowds In May

If you’re looking for light crowds and short lines, the month of May is usually a great time to visit Disneyland. The long and busy Spring Break season, which starts in the middle of March and through April, is finally over with, making way for a less crowded resort in much of May.

While the annual Grad Nite event does take place after park closing on some nights and the weather starts to get warmer during the day, it’s not the summer season just yet. The bulk of the summer crowds don’t begin to arrive until June.

The Disneyland Resort anticipates Monday-Thursday to be the least busiest days of the week in May. The crowds do tend to pick up on Fridays, and weekends will generally be busier. Here’s some of the dates you may want to try to avoid if you’re going this month.

Dates To Avoid

Memorial Day Weekend – Big crowds and long lines are the norm throughout Memorial Day weekend. If you don’t like crowds, avoid going on that Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

After Memorial Day – Disneyland is expected to get crowded for the summer right after Memorial Day. With midnight park closings and a full entertainment lineup scheduled for the entire week, the summer season crowds don’t let up until the end of August.

Planning on Disneyland May 7-10 (Tues-Fri)…it says “ghost town” which I assume just means not as busy as normal. Will we still be waiting hours to get on a ride?

  • Robert

Crowds should be light on those days. Ghost Town days mean very minimal wait times!

  • Jason

Sweet! So on these weekdays, I realize it is not a full-go (like fireworks), does the Fastpass still work or is that more for days when it’s packed? Is there even a need for it? Also would you say three days is enough to visit everything in Disneyland with two younger kids?

  • Robert

Yeah, they still have Fastpass, but you probably won’t need to use it. 3 days should be plenty of time. Have fun!

  • Ash

So The Day After Memorial Day Is Going To Be Really Crowded? & That Is On A Tuesday

  • Robert

I don’t think it will be too packed since a lot of schools will still be in session after Memorial Day.

  • Ash

Okay Sounds Good (: Thank You.

hi planning on disneyland May 19/20/21 in 2014.i think this will be a good quiet time? looks like it is the week before memorial weekend? will that mean no firewworks? do they happen on the weekend so we could plan to go sunday18th?

  • Robert

Yes, it’s usually a good time to go before it gets crowded for the summer. I don’t believe there’s fireworks on weekdays before Memorial Day Weekend, but they should have them on Sunday.

  • Stephen

Hey! My family was thinking about planning a trip somewhere around May 5-9, 2014. The crowd calendar says that these days are somewhere around the “Ghost Town” level. Would you agree? We’re trying to find a good time to go during the baseball season so we can also see the Dodgers. Also, my younger sister has autism, so we’re trying to find a few days where the lines are at a minimum, as she has problems with line. Do you think these days would cut it? Thanks! :)

  • Robert

Yes, crowds are usually light around that time since that’s after the Spring Break season, so there should be minimal lines that week. Should be a good time to go!

  • Wendy

Would June 1st, 2nd and 3rd be a decent time to go? I don’t think most schools get out until June 4th and later.

  • Wendy

    2014

  • Robert

I’d be prepared for it to still be busy since some schools will be out for the summer by then, but it should be a better time to go than later in the month. LAUSD gets out on June 5, so you’ll be avoiding those crowds.

  • DanielleMarie

We have been to Disneyland about 10 times, and early May is the absolute BEST! We have literally walked on to rides like Space Mountain, where in the summer we typically wait an hour. Love May visits!

  • DanielleMarie

And FYI–schools in AZ get out before the end of May and then the mad rush to Disney begins. Soooooo…if you can hit it in May instead of June, I would.

  • Jasmine

Don’t forget college students and high school seniors get out in late May. There won’t be as many families with young children, but there will probably be a lot of teenagers and young adults!

  • Jasmine

I’m planning a trip for two adults for Tuesday, May 20th- Thursday, May 22nd (three days). I am starting to get concerned that we will not be able to see any fireworks shows or World of Color because we will only be there during weekdays. The 24 hr Disney day is on Friday, May 23rd, so do you think they might have fireworks during the week? I’ll be SO disappointed if we miss them!

On another note, do you have an idea of which fireworks show will be playing? I’m not sure if it will be “Magical” or “Remember…Dreams Come True”. Thanks!

  • Jasmine

When you go in May, are there usually fireworks shows during the week? I am so worried that there will not be any fireworks shows or World of Color except on the weekend, and we will only be there on a Tuesday-Thursday. Thanks!

  • Robert

There should be World of Color on weekdays, but I’m not sure about the fireworks though since that’s before the summer season officially begins.

  • Star

I am planning an no-kids trip for Mother’s Day (Sunday, Monday). Has anyone been there that weekend? I would anticipate that it is not busy, but I don’t know how most moms spend their Mother’s Day.

  • Robert

It’s expected to be manageable on those days. Mother’s Day traditionally isn’t very crowded.

  • amber

planning disney on may 13,14 and 15th. it states hey, its alright… is that kind of busy for wait lines or still kind of slow?

  • Robert

That means manageable crowds, usually around 30min waits. It shouldn’t be too packed since most of the summer crowds won’t be out yet.

  • Marissa Swift

I am planning to go to Disneyland May 22nd-27th. Since that is Memorial Day weekend and Disney is having their 24 hour event should I just assume that it will be a total madhouse for the entire trip?

    Marissa

  • Robert

I don’t think it’ll be a madhouse the entire trip, maybe just on Friday for the 24-hour event. Saturday-Monday should be busy since it’s a holiday weekend, but Thursday and Tuesday should be manageable. Try to get there early!

  • Liz

Hi, I have been planning my 30th birthday to be in Disneyland.. This also happens to be a grad night – 17th May. Since we don’t have grad nights in Australia I’m not sure what to expect. Is it usually busy during the day on a grad night or should I just expect it to be crazy busy being a Saturday?

  • Robert

Grad Nite guests can to go to both parks during the day, so I’d be prepared for it be to crowded on that day. Most of the big crowds usually arrive in the evening though, so try to get there early if you can for more manageable lines. The good news is that all annual passports (except Premium) are blocked out that day.

  • Liz

Great, thanks for your reply! Our plan is to be at the gates for when they open to make the most of it. We are also going on the 14th so hopefully we will get to go on a lot of rides between the 2 days.
